A. Dovzhenko is
the famous Ukrainian writer, the
director of silent films. He is one of the founders of Ukrainian cinematography. He is considered by many to have been one of the world's greatest film
directors.
He was
born in 1894 in
Chernigivskaya region. His parents had many children--fourteen in
all, two survived, Alexandr and his sister Polina, who became a doctor. The other children died at different times, hardly any of them
reaching working age.
Because of political problems, he was
able to complete only seven feature-length films; these include his major works,
"Zvenihora, Arsenal, " and "Earth." They were about contemporary life, with the common man at its centre. They were
named among the best films of all times. He travelled around Europe showing his best
films to Europeans.
He also visited Great Britain
once. He studied the possibilities of sound films there.
He was a correspondent in World War II and sketched for films, stories, plays, and novels.
He
worked for the Odesa and Kyiv studios. Apart from a number of feature films he
made documentaries. Besides he wrote script-like stories and plays. Since 1946
he stayed to work at the Mosfilm Studio. He died
in Moscow in 1956.
